On the first of February, I decided to finally go and see Makoto Shinkai’s tenth animated film called “Weathering With You”. I have been anticipating the release of this film ever since it was announced, because I’ve loved Shinkai’s last movie, “Your Name” and have become a growing fan of his work
In “Weathering With You”, a boy named Hodaka Morishima (voiced by Kotaro Daigo), is drawn to a light, and runs away from home to chase this it in the sky to Tokyo, where he meets a girl, Hina Amano (Voiced by Nana Mori). Hina has the ability to control the weather, a power she obtained after losing her mother. Fate brings them together as they venture around helping others. In one scene they use Hina’s ability to make the sunlight cut through the clouds to shine on them as the rain goes away. This story of youth and romance is told to us with an artstyle and animation, music, and cast that makes us feel for their characters. These are always the mainstays of a movie by Shinkai. However the use of the characters really stood out to me. The characters all shape the story, regardless if they are a supporting character or main character. All the characters in “Weathering With You” have a purpose and they support Hodaka and Hina on their journey.
I loved every minute of this movie, and I do not want to spoil anyone who might be interested in watching too. I recommend taking a look if you enjoyed “Your Name”; you might be surprised by what you see.
