First Impressions: Creed III

On March 3, 2023, Adonis Creed stepped back into the ring once more for this third installment of the Creed series as he has to face a menacing aura from his past.  Michael  B. Jordan returns to portray his role as Adonis Creed, while also making his directorial debut. Creed III continues on the legacy Adonis has fought to build: his career in the boxing world whilst enjoying his life with his family. Life’s good until he returns to see him in the form of his childhood friend,  Damian Anderson, who is played by the remarkable Jonathan Majors. Damian was a former powerhouse  in the boxing game whose career abruptly ended due to a situation that also caused Adonis and him to lose touch. But years later, Damian resurfaces and wants what was supposed to be his. This leads to Adonis dealing with him that becomes something even more than just a fight.

This movie was fantastic. It’s filled with drama that hits as hard as the punches that are being thrown in each boxing scene and both of them just stick. Keenan Coogler’s vision for this movie was just phenomenal as I got to experience it with my own eyes as I was deeply touched by how this story was told through an amazing cast that was directed by Michael B. Jordan himself. Creed’s family was one of my highlights of the movie. Both his Mom and his wife, who tremendously help and support Adonis throughout that movie in a very strong and passionate way, are played very well by Phylicia Rashad and Tessa Thompson. Jonathan Majors has outdone himself in this role as well, showing us how ruthless and unmovable Damian is; the build up for him in the story from start to finish was well done, Jonathan knows how to portray someone that knows what they want and that they can take it, while full well knowing that they’re a ruthless force of nature.

One of the things that I thought was a unique and genius move from Michael was that he was inspired to make each fight scene like something from an anime, each fight captures emotion while still showing how bad ass the scene is, with each jab thrown or a perfectly dodged by the boxers. Knowing how big an anime fan Michael B. Jordan is, I think he knew what he and Keenan Coogler were cooking for us, because this movie has been one of the best movies I’ve seen this year, or possibly even in a long time. I recommend this movie to Rocky fans or anime fans who enjoyed the last two Creed movies in this amazing spin-off trilogy from the best boxing movie franchise of all time. Check out Creed III, out in theaters right now.
