Behind the Mic is a series of short interviews to celebrate the work of the actors who provided the voices for Mortuus Est: Origins.

Today we have Ria Ridley, who plays Senator Rosaline Carroll.

How long have you been acting for?

I have been acting for about 7 years now.

What made you begin acting?

I’ve been wanting to act since I was a child. However, one day in my second semester of freshman year of college, I was studying biology at the time, I realized I was not doing what young Ria wanted to do. So I decided to switch my major to theater to pursue it seriously as a career choice. WITH NO “BACK UP”!

Who do you play in Mortuus Est: Origins? Do you relate to your character? If yes, how so? If not, how did you get into character?

I play Senator Rosaline Carroll in Mortuus Est: Origins. I don’t feel I too closely relate to her. I have to channel my mother and grandmother who are strong matriarchs in my family to get into character.

You play the lead in an audio drama, have you always done voice acting or do you perform in other mediums as well?

I mainly performed through television and film. However, voice acting has always been an interest of mine and something I want to get into more, especially audio dramas!

In the forms of acting you have done, what challenges do you think present themselves in each form?

I believe a big challenge that presents itself for me is fully being able to be present authentically in emotions of sadness, loss, or despair.

How do you overcome challenges when performing?

I give it my best to go and trust that when everything comes together it’s never as bad as I think… because of course, we’re our worst critic!

Is there an actor, director, teacher, or friend you draw inspiration from? If so, please tell me about them and why they inspire you.

Honestly, there are quite a few actors in which the thing that I draw inspiration from, from them is their ability to have made a long lasting and fruitful career out of it. A big thing I really want in acting is I just to have longevity and consistency. I love the craft, and I know what it takes to be able to put what you need to put forward, but I also know that it is very much a job and one I want to be able to do full time.

What is one thing you know now, you wish you knew when you began your acting career?

One thing I know now that I wish I knew was that I did not have to go to college to pursue this career. If I had to go to college again I would have majored in business administration with a minor in marketing.

Hear Ria in action as Rosaline in Mortuus Est: Origins!
